Selective School & Scholarship Exam Coaching

In NSW, Selective High Schools provide an academic enriched environment for highly achieving, academically gifted students.

There are 17 fully selective high schools, 9 high schools that are partially selective and 4 agricultural high schools.

Entrance to selective high schools is via a competitive examination conducted for students in Year 6 for Year 7 entry. Each year up to 16,000 students compete for up to 3000 places in these selective schools.

Students who miss out on Year 7 entry to a Selective High School may be able to gain entry to one of these schools if a vacancy arises by applying directly to the school. Often candidates must submit report cards of their progress in high school to date and may have to sit for a competitive examination.

In either case, Brainy Bunch Education offers intensive coaching for entry into selective high schools.

Why aim for a place in a Selective High School?

In Year 12, students must complete the HSC or High School Certificate Examination after which they will be awarded a UAI (University Admissions Index). Top courses at University including Medicine, Law, IT, Finance, Dentistry etc often require high UAI scores.

The calculation of the UAI takes into account 2 components - a class mark and a central examination mark. The class mark of an individual in a school is determined by the student's rank in his school AND how the student's school as a whole performed in the central board examination. There is a 50/50 weighting given to both the class mark and the exam mark.

Because of the way in which the UAI is calculated, above average students in high performing schools may be at an advantage relative to their peers at schools where performance is lower. This could cause overall UAI of individuals with the same academic ability to vary markedly.

A more compelling reason to seek entry to a selective high school is that students are sourrounded by like minded peers with the same focus on academic excellence and are therefore more likely to excel in their studies.
